Pilanesberg airport rebuild has reported R1 billion private backing

Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson says a modernised airport would strengthen North West’s appeal as a domestic and international destination.

Could a R1 billion airport rebuild near Sun City bring new jobs and easier travel to the North West?

Pilanesberg International Airport near Sun City is being rebuilt with R1 billion from private investors after significant fire damage in 2023. The airport is in South Africa’s North West province, between Sun City Resort and Pilanesberg National Park.

Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson linked the airport’s modernisation to the province’s ability to attract domestic and international visitors. He presented the project as a way to strengthen North West’s competitiveness as a tourism destination.

A February 2026 agreement between the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure, through Infrastructure South Africa, and the North West Provincial Government is responsible for this project coming to life. It covers project preparation and packaging support for the North West Aviation Infrastructure Programme, with an expected rollout of 24–36 months for the wider programme.

That agreement concerns support for preparing aviation projects, while the reported R1 billion private investment concerns the airport rebuild. The programme’s 24–36-month estimate is not an airport completion timetable.

For Macpherson, the airport’s location gives the rebuilding project a role beyond the terminal itself. He described tourism, trade and access to markets as intended benefits once the work is complete.

“Once completed, this airport will serve as an international gateway to the Pilanesberg area to further increase tourism, trade and market access,” Macpherson said.

While the rebuild could boost tourism in the North West, the question still stands - what will the R1 billion investment mean for ordinary South Africans in terms of local jobs, small-business opportunities and affordable flights?
